Solid gold, vermeil, gold-filled, gold-tone: the four things "gold" means

Two hundred and nineteen, and zero. Across AMANDA PEARL's 269 live products, 219 reference 14k gold and 76 reference sterling silver — and not one references 18k, vermeil, gold-fill or plating. There is no plated tier. Across Roxanne Assoulin's 413 product descriptions, brass is named 75 times, enamel 73, crystal 52, cubic zirconia 28 and plated 4, and a karat is named not once.

Both catalogues use the word gold. They mean entirely different things by it, and the difference is roughly a factor of thirty at the entry point. Everything below comes from the brands' own catalogue, care and policy pages as recorded in our brand files on 4–5 September 2026.

The four words

Solid gold is an alloy all the way through, and a karat number states how much of it is gold. Vermeil is sterling silver with a gold layer over it, held to a minimum thickness and fineness under US Federal Trade Commission guidance. Gold-filled is a bonded gold layer defined as a fraction of the item's total weight — thicker than plate, and not solid. Gold-tone is not a materials claim at all. It is a colour, and it tells you nothing about what is underneath.

What the fifteen brands actually publish

The solid case

BEN gives the cleanest demonstration on the board, because it sells one design in two metals. The Ace Vault, its launch locket, is $4,400–$6,000 in 14k recycled gold and $750–$1,345 in sterling. Its charms run $595 in sterling and $1,220 in 14k. Nothing about the object changes; the metal does.

Run those through the tool and the gap is stark. Worn once a week for five years, the sterling Ace Vault at $750 is $2.88 a wear, which the bands read as Buy on sale. The same locket at $4,400 in gold is $16.92 a wear — a Skip on the identical wear count.

BEN also publishes the arithmetic behind the word, which almost nobody does: its product-care page states that 14k is 58.3% pure gold alloyed with copper, silver and zinc, and that sterling is 92.5% pure silver. That is what a karat number is for.

The gold-tone case

Roxanne Assoulin is explicit that this is not fine jewelry, and its own care guide is the most honest document in our files on the subject: the pieces are "happy but fragile", enamel "has a tendency to chip", and the line is not "designed to be precious".

Read the materials against the prices. The Pavé Stone Hinged Bracelets at $1,150 are polished gold tone set with crystal pavé and named semi-precious stones — moss agate, dalmatian, tiger's eye, carnelian. The Cylinder Cord Necklace at $125 is acrylic cylinder sliders with a cubic zirconia detail on a cord. The Big Puffy Heart Charm Necklace is $145, the Token Heart Earring $110, and the Camp Bracelets $45 marked from $75.

On pure arithmetic these do well: $125 worn weekly for five years is $0.48 a wear. The arithmetic assumes the piece survives 260 wears, and the brand's own care page is the reason to discount that assumption. Jennifer Behr sits in the same materials class at higher prices — Austrian crystal and gold-plated brass, no solid gold and no diamonds — where the $188 Tori Headband is $0.72 a wear.

The missing middle

Here is the finding that surprised us. Not one of the fifteen brands in our files publishes a vermeil or gold-filled claim anywhere. The board is solid metal or it is tone, with nothing in between — so we have no sourced example of either middle tier, and we put no price on one.

That matters because vermeil and gold-filled are exactly where a shopper looking for durable gold colour under $200 usually lands. If you are buying in that band, you are buying it outside this board, and the questions in the last section are the ones to take with you.

What the terms add

Roxanne Assoulin deducts a $10 handling fee from every refund, automatically, inside a fourteen-day window — by our division, 8% of the $125 necklace. All sale items and all customisation are final sale, custom bracelets ship in three to four weeks and custom sizing takes two to three, both final. No country of manufacture is stated anywhere, and there is no nickel-free, lead-free or hypoallergenic claim, which sits awkwardly next to a Trustpilot score of 1.8 out of 5 from 20 reviews on an unclaimed profile whose six most recent entries, January to April 2026, cite tarnishing and breakage.

How to read a listing

Three questions settle it. Does the listing state a karat or a fineness — 14k, 18k, sterling? If the answer is "gold tone", "gold finish" or "gold-coloured", the metal underneath is unstated, as it is on Nomasei's $150 pendant. If it says plated, is a thickness given? Jennifer Behr's plating is disclosed; its thickness is not, and thickness is what decides whether the colour lasts a season or a decade. And if it says vermeil or gold-filled, does the seller name the standard it meets?

Then price the metal, not the word. One locket, two metals: $2.88 a wear at $750 in sterling, $16.92 at $4,400 in 14k. Deciding which you want is a real decision; being unable to tell which you bought is not.
