Nomasei: designed in Paris, made in Montopoli, returnable for 15 days
A named village, a family factory of around forty people, and an 11-stage build — against a 15-day return window, 20% withheld for try-on marks and a further 10% without the box. Real prices, the per-style fit decoder, and the duty question the site never answers.

Fifteen days, and 20% withheld if the soles show a scuff. Those are the two numbers that decide whether a pair of Nomasei shoes is a good purchase, and neither appears anywhere near the price. On the $850 STRADA suede ankle boot, a 20% deduction for try-on or wear traces is $170; if the box has gone in the recycling, a further 10% comes off and the deduction is $255. The brand's own mitigation is to ask customers to try shoes on carpet, which tells you how literally the term is meant.
Everything else here is unusually legible: a named factory, a named village, a published headcount, per-style fit guidance most footwear houses do not bother with. The terms are where the risk sits.
What they actually sell
Women's luxury footwear, designed in Paris and made in Tuscany: sandals, ballet flats, loafers and moccasins, derbies, pumps, ankle boots, and tall and over-the-knee boots. A small accessory line sits alongside — merino and lisle-thread socks, a cotton tote, one gold-tone pendant, and Saphir leather-care products.
The brand was founded in 2018 by Paule Tenaillon and Marine Braquet and is headquartered in Paris. It sells direct to consumer only — its own site, a Paris showroom at 25 boulevard Poissonnière, and travelling pop-ups — with no wholesale channel, which the brand states is deliberate. One verified independent US stockist exists, millie + madge in Woodstock, New York, carrying around 21 styles at $300–$1,295. Consistent with the stated model, Nomasei is not at Net-a-Porter, Moda Operandi, Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus or Shopbop.
Who makes it, and where
Montopoli, Tuscany. Every pair is made in a family-run shoe factory in the village, founded roughly twenty years ago and now run by the founders' three sons, employing around forty people. The brand states that it outsources none of the operations on its shoes: everything from leather cutting to final assembly happens in Tuscany, within a maximum 55km radius of the factory. Design happens in Paris.
The leather account is similarly detailed and similarly the brand's own. Leathers are sourced from France, Italy and Holland and tanned in Italy near Montopoli; the brand states it works exclusively with tanneries holding certifications such as REACH or Leather Working Group membership, and claims full traceability from animal origin to tannery management. Construction is described as an eleven-stage process with hand operations at cutting, assembly, heel nailing and finishing, over hand-crafted lasts.
Two qualifications belong with that. The certifications named — REACH, Leather Working Group, DURC — sit at tannery and supplier level, not brand level. And the sustainability vocabulary, including "eco-feminist" and "low-carbon footprint", is the brand's own language, unquantified anywhere we could check.
What it costs
Prices as recorded on the US storefront, 4–5 September 2026, in USD:
| Style | Price |
|---|---|
| WHISPER over-the-knee boots, black | $1,495 |
| TWIST boots, black | $1,295 |
| ARIA ankle boots, suede black | $890 |
| STRADA ankle boots, suede black | $850 |
| GATTACA pumps, patent black | $780 |
| NONO moccasins, tricolour burgundy | $650 |
| FLIP ballet flats, black | $510 |
Full price runs $430–$650 for flat sandals, $850–$930 for ankle boots and $1,295–$1,495 for tall boots; sale and archive styles start from around $270. Accessories are a different order of magnitude: socks $35–$75, the cotton tote $36, leather-care products $17–$40, and one pendant at $150.
That pendant deserves a line on a site about what things weigh. The "Hand Nomasei" is listed only as gold-coloured — no karat, no metal composition, nothing. At $150 it is the cheapest way into the brand and the only item in the catalogue with no material disclosure at all. A live "Product Test" item and $49.99 placeholders also render in the public listing, so not every URL is a real product.
Signature pieces
- ARIA ankle boot, $890–$910 — the house signature, a sock-like unreinforced boot
- WHISPER over-the-knee boot, $1,495 — the halo piece, in camoscio brown, black and silver
- NONO tricolour loafer, $630–$650 — colour-blocked, high arch
- TWIST knee boot $1,295, TAXI sandal $530, SONICS derby $670–$690, GATTACA pump $780
The terms
There are no affiliate links on this page. Every term below is the brand's own published statement, recorded 4–5 September 2026, not ours.
Returns. Fifteen days from receipt, not thirty. Return shipping is free, and refunds are processed within twenty working days of receipt. Our return-window reference sheet puts Nomasei in the fifteen-day band — thirteen of the fifteen brands we cover give fifteen days or fewer.
The deductions. This is the most detailed deduction schedule of the fifteen brands on that board, and the most expensive. Twenty per cent is withheld on any return showing slight try-on or wear traces, and the brand names scuffed soles and scratched metalwork as examples. A further 10% is withheld if the item is not repacked in its original box or arrives without secondary packaging. On the $850 STRADA that is $170, or $255 without the box.
Final sale. Sale and archived styles are not refundable — store credit only. Full price is the only tier that returns money.
Duties and shipping. Whether US import duties are prepaid at checkout or collected on delivery is not stated anywhere on the site — an unpriced variable on a $1,495 boot shipped from France, worth asking about in writing before you order. Shipping is free over $460 to the US, delivered with signature in one to five working days after dispatch. Returns can be made in person at the Paris showroom, but must not be posted there.
Sizing. EU 36–42 with half sizes, and a published FR/US/UK conversion chart — FR 37 is US 6.5, FR 39 is US 8, FR 41 is US 9.75. The model-by-model fit guidance is the most useful thing on the site given the return terms: ARIA, TWIST and WHISPER are built "like socks" with almost no reinforcement, so half a size down; NONO has a high arch, half a size down; THEOFFICE and DOYOU run large, half a size down; TRENCH runs small, half a size up; SATURDAY has no half sizes, so round down. Most other styles fit true to size. A repair service is offered, and Saphir care kits are sold alongside the shoes.
Press, with provenance
Vogue published a piece introducing the brand in 2019, headlined around two Chloé alumni building an affordable direct-to-consumer shoe label. Do It In Paris published coverage of a Nomasei pop-up. Both are verified.
Our file also holds two Forbes URLs from 2020, both linked from the brand's own press page and neither independently read by us. We are not describing them as coverage Forbes published, because we have not confirmed it — they are citations the brand lists, and that is all we can say.
There is no independent customer review record at all: no Trustpilot profile, no BBB listing, no Sitejabber page. The only account of the product is the brand's own, and the only correction mechanism is the return policy.
Comparable brands
Aeyde, ATP Atelier, Le Monde Beryl, Neous and Porte & Paire work the same territory: European design, southern-European manufacture, direct pricing that skips the wholesale margin. Nomasei's distinguishing disclosure is the factory — a village, a headcount and a radius rather than a country.
THE PENNYWEIGHT VERDICT
Buy at full price — on a style whose fit you can settle before the box arrives.
The number is 20%. On the $850 STRADA that is $170 withheld for a scuffed sole, and $255 if the original box has gone, inside a fifteen-day window. That deduction is the real price of guessing on size, which is why the brand's own per-style guidance is worth reading twice before checkout — and why a pop-up or the millie + madge stockist is worth the trip if either is near you.
Full price is also the only tier with a refund behind it, since sale and archive styles return store credit only. The cost-per-wear arithmetic is not the problem: $890 over an illustrative 250 wears is $3.56 a wear, and a boot cut, assembled and finished by hand in one factory is the kind of thing that reaches 250. The exposure is entirely in the fifteen days between delivery and the deadline.
Prices, catalogue detail, manufacturing and materials claims, policy terms and press citations are drawn from Nomasei's own pages and product data, from the named stockists' listings, and from the named publications, as recorded in our brand files on 4–5 September 2026. Terms change without notice. The Pennyweight buys nothing, accepts no gifted product, and is not affiliated with any brand or retailer named here.
