About · why this exists
A Pennyweight Is a Unit, Not an Adjective
A pennyweight — dwt — is one twentieth of a troy ounce, 1.555 grams: the unit goldsmiths and refiners actually weigh precious metal in. It is the right name for a publication that puts a number on a claim instead of a superlative.
Shopping coverage in this category runs on adjectives. A piece is timeless, or elevated, or an investment you will treasure forever. None of those words survives contact with a receipt. What survives is: 18k, 12.4 g, $4,200 — about $2.80 a wear if you wear it twice a week for five years. That sentence is the whole editorial position.
So we report the measurable part. Metal and karat and gram weight. Carat weight, and which laboratory issued the grade, and whether the stone is natural, lab-grown, moissanite or treated. The published price, and the price band around it. The sizing chart, the resizing tolerance, the return window, who pays return shipping, and which categories are final sale. What resale actually recovers — and, far more often than the resale platforms admit, that nobody knows.
We are an honest aggregator, and we say so plainly. We do not wear the clothes, grade the stones or bench-test the settings, and no article here claims otherwise. Every factual claim about a brand traces to that brand's own site, a grading laboratory, a named publication or a review platform, and the piece says which. Dated claims carry their date. If a number is not in our sources, the article does not state it.
One consequence worth stating up front: a brand's own press page is not evidence of coverage. When we checked, thirty of the hundred and six press citations in our brand files turned out to be the brand's claim rather than something we had read — including one citation whose link pointed back at the brand's own site. We name an outlet only where we read the outlet. Everything else is labelled as the brand's claim.

Imogen Hart
Jewelry & Materials Desk
Covers fine jewelry as a materials question. Imogen analyses published grading reports, metal karat and gram weights, catalogue price histories and refiner data — she does not appraise, grade or bench-test anything herself, and holds no gemological credential. We buy nothing, we accept no gifted product, and we earn a commission when a reader buys through our links.
June Petrakis
Clothing, Fit & Resale Desk
Tracks designer ready-to-wear as a numbers problem: published sizing charts, fabric composition, return windows and final-sale rules, and how retail and resale prices actually move. Analysis is drawn from documentation and market listings, never from fabricated wear-testing. We buy nothing, we accept no gifted product, and we earn a commission when a reader buys through our links.
The Pennyweight Desk
Editorial Desk
The house byline for anything aggregated — comparisons, roundups and the Pennyweight Verdict. The Desk assembles sourced figures from brand documentation, grading labs and named publications into one comparable sheet, and states the date every figure was checked. We buy nothing, we accept no gifted product, and we earn a commission when a reader buys through our links.
The short list
Three entries from the ledger — the full ranking lives on the best-of pages.
Disclosure —some links on this page are affiliate links: when a partner programme is live we earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. It never changes the price you pay and it never changes a verdict. We buy nothing, we accept no gifted product, and we are not affiliated with any brand we cover. Where a programme has not been approved yet, we say so instead of linking.
