Under $500, most of what gets shelved as fine jewelry is not fine jewelry. Four of our fifteen brands sell solid metal in this band; everything else at this price is brass, plated brass, crystal, cubic zirconia and enamel.

The short version

Four of the fifteen covered brands sell solid metal under $500 — AMANDA PEARL, BEN, Liori Diamonds and a non-core corner of Noémie’s storefront at $190–$330.
BEN’s $250 sterling KERFUFFLE is $0.96 a wear over 260 wears, states its metal precisely at 92.5% silver, and is a complete necklace rather than a component.
AMANDA PEARL’s $325 Baroque Pearl Charm is a cultured pearl on a recycled 14k bale at $1.25 a wear — but the chain is sold separately and most of its earrings are sold singly.
BEN counts fourteen calendar days from delivery with no holiday extension, so a gift bought three weeks ahead can be out of window on the morning it is opened; of the sellers tabled here only AMANDA PEARL extends into January and Noémie to 60 days.
Nomasei’s $150 pendant is listed only as gold-coloured with no metal content stated, and Gwynn’s $110 Jenny Bird necklace has no material recorded in our file, so we make no metal claim about either.

Under $500, most of what gets shelved as "fine jewelry gifts" is not fine jewelry. Across the fifteen brands in our files, four sell solid metal in this band — AMANDA PEARL, BEN, Liori Diamonds and a non-core corner of Noémie's storefront. Everything else at this price is brass, plated brass, Austrian crystal, cubic zirconia, glass and enamel, sold honestly as such by houses that never claim otherwise.

Both categories are worth buying. They are not the same purchase, and a gift is the worst moment to discover which one you made. Every price and term below comes from the sellers' own pages as recorded in our brand files on 4–5 September 2026.

The terms, before any pick

A gift has a problem an ordinary purchase does not: the return clock starts when the parcel is delivered, not when it is opened.

BEN's fourteen calendar days is the one to plan around. A locket bought three weeks before a birthday is out of window on the morning it is unwrapped. Of the sellers in this table only AMANDA PEARL and Noémie publish a holiday extension. The full board has the rest.

The solid-metal picks

AMANDA PEARL is the deepest option, because its entire catalogue is solid: 219 of 269 products reference 14k gold and 76 reference sterling, with no plated tier at all. Charms run roughly $125 to $350, and the small Baroque Pearl Charm at $325 is a cultured baroque pearl on a recycled 14k gold ripple bale. Read the listing before you buy: the chain is sold separately, and most of the house's earrings are sold individually rather than as pairs. The pieces are sold direct on AMANDA PEARL's own site.

BEN's entry is sterling silver — THE KERFUFFLE necklace at $250 and THE PAPERCLIP chain at $295, on Italian-sourced silver — with the enamel-beaded Reason Rope bracelet from $350. The house publishes its metallurgy, stating sterling as 92.5% pure silver, which is more than most do at any price.

Liori's 0.50ctw basket-set studs at $499 are 14k white gold and the cheapest diamond studs on our board. The stone type is not recorded in our file, and this is a catalogue holding natural, lab-grown, moissanite and treated stones side by side — so ask before you buy, not after.

Noémie reaches this band only in a non-core corner of its own storefront: a sterling-silver birthstone assortment at $190–$330, listed under a separate vendor name. Solid metal, but not the 18K gold the rest of the site sells.

The costume picks, labelled as such

Jennifer Behr makes hand-made hair accessories and crystal-and-pearl jewelry in Brooklyn: the Tori Headband at $188 is the house best-seller, the Lune Earrings $198, the Voilette Headband $282, the Justine crystal drops $295 and the fully crystal-encrusted Czarina Headband $450 at 113g. The materials are Austrian crystal, freshwater and baroque-style pearls, silk and plated base metal — not solid gold and not diamonds.

Roxanne Assoulin sits lower and is equally plain about it. The Big Puffy Heart Charm Necklace is $145 in polished gold tone, the Cylinder Cord Necklace $125 in acrylic with a cubic zirconia detail, the Token Heart Earring $110, and the Camp Bracelets $45 marked from $75. The brand's own care guide calls the pieces "happy but fragile" and warns that enamel "has a tendency to chip"; its Trustpilot profile, unclaimed, shows 1.8 out of 5 from 20 reviews.

Nomasei's single "Hand Nomasei" pendant is $150 and listed only as gold-coloured, with no metal content or karat stated anywhere — the clearest example on this board of a piece whose material is simply not disclosed.

What we cannot price

Two gaps, stated rather than filled. Fiametta's catalogue floor is $440, but our file does not name the piece that sits there, so we name no sub-$500 Fiametta gift. And at Gwynn's, fashion jewelry runs roughly $110 to $260 — the Jenny Bird "A" Monogram Necklace is $110 — but our file does not record what the metal is, so we make no materials claim about it.

The arithmetic

At 260 wears — once a week for five years — almost everything in this band clears the top verdict band, which is what a low entry price is for. The $110 Token Heart Earring is $0.42 a wear, the $145 heart necklace $0.56, the $150 Nomasei pendant $0.58, the $188 Tori $0.72, the $250 Kerfuffle $0.96, the $325 charm $1.25, the $450 Czarina $1.73 and the $499 studs $1.92.

Those figures all assume 260 wears actually happen. On solid metal that is a reasonable assumption. On enamel over brass it is the assumption the seller's own care page tells you to discount.

THE PENNYWEIGHT VERDICT

Buy at full price — on the solid-metal picks.

The number is $0.96. BEN's $250 sterling KERFUFFLE clears our top band with room, states its metal precisely, and is a real necklace rather than a component. AMANDA PEARL's $325 charm is $1.25 and equally solid, with the caveat that it needs a chain.

The costume picks are cheaper per wear on paper, and they are legitimate gifts — of colour rather than of metal. Buy them knowing that Roxanne Assoulin takes $10 off any refund, that Jennifer Behr's crystal sits on plated brass, and that what "gold" means on a listing is the difference between the two halves of this guide.
