The wedding-guest edit: prices, fabrics and return windows

Four weddings a year for five years is twenty wears, and on that count every occasion dress across our five covered clothing sellers is a Skip — from $16.75 a wear to $89.50. The fix is not a cheaper dress.

The short version

At four wears a year for five years, every occasion pick here lands in the Skip band: $16.75 on Finley’s $335 Jasmine, $29.75 on a $595 Nili Lotan gown at Gwynn’s, $42.50 on the $850 Anna October Clementine and $89.50 on Heirlome’s $1,790 Alyona.

Four weddings a year for five years is twenty wears. On that count the occasion dresses across our five covered clothing sellers run from $16.75 a wear to $89.50 — and every one of them lands in the Skip band. That is the finding, not a rhetorical setup. An occasion dress bought for four outings a year is hard to justify on our own arithmetic whatever the label.

Which does not mean nobody should buy one. It means the wear count, not the price tag, is the decision — and that the terms decide how much a wrong guess costs you. Every price and term below comes from the sellers' own pages as recorded in our brand files on 4–5 September 2026.

Two of those need saying out loud. Gwynn's runs on-site bespoke tailoring in the same building it sells from, and altering a garment voids its returnability — so the convenience and the risk arrive together. And Anna October prices and charges US shoppers in euros, so the EUR 40 return leg comes with a card conversion on top. The whole board of return terms sits in one table.

Under $700

This is the band where a dress can escape the occasion category, which is the only thing that fixes the arithmetic.

Finley's Jasmine Shirt Dress is $335 in 100% washed linen with Akoya shell buttons, cut and sewn in the USA. The Johanna Wrap Dress and the crochet Beverly Long are $460, the Laine and Harlowe tie-fronts $380, the Miller puff-sleeve cotton $310, and the Long Chantal Shirt Dress tops the range at $645 in a fabric the brand literally calls Wedding Guest Jacquard — $32.25 a wear at twenty wears. Note the brand flags several styles including the Jasmine as running large, and returns need a label requested in advance or the parcel is refused.

At Gwynn's, the Nili Lotan Cami Gown is $595, or $29.75 a wear. For a separates route, Heirlome's Adau silk tank is $590 and its Arnulfo Vazquez silk-twill scarf $290, printed with the original artwork of the named Tonalá artisan and made in Italy.

$700 to $1,800

Anna October's Clementine Satin Maxi Dress is $850 at Moda Operandi — the one price in our Anna October file verifiably quoted in dollars, since the brand's own storefront bills US shoppers in euros. It is 57% viscose / 43% polyester, the same cloth as the EUR 725 Isolde, and dry clean only. Twenty wears puts it at $42.50.

Markarian is the centre of gravity here, and Vogue Runway's Irene Kim, reviewing the Fall 2026 collection, wrote that what the label does best is formalwear. Its occasion midis cluster tightly: the Nara and Gazania sequin-embroidery dresses at $1,595, the Coquette, Cypress and Amina at $1,695, the Aristea Sunflower Mini at $1,295. The Marla Lace Wrap Skirt Midi is $1,695, or $84.75 a wear, and we have taken that one apart on its own.

Heirlome's tailoring sits alongside it: the Abigail Trousers at $1,390 and the Alyona Dress at $1,790, both in the house 32% silk / 68% wool, both Made in USA, both dry clean only, both sized US 0–10 with no extended range.

Above $1,800

Markarian's brocade and ikat corset dresses run $1,895 to $2,895 — the Numa ikat corset midi $1,895, the ivory metallic brocade Numa $1,950, the Kalahari $1,995, the Yvette $2,195, the Ginevra Silver $2,795, the Aria strapless $2,895 — with the Erica Red Bloom chiffon midi at $4,495 topping the ready-to-wear.

Gwynn's carries the black-tie end: occasion gowns from $1,295 to $5,990 across Oscar de la Renta, Talbot Runhof, Catherine Regehr and Rachel Gilbert, with the Oscar de la Renta Hibiscus Silk Chiffon Caftan at $5,990. Heirlome's Quinn Jacket is $3,790 and its hand-crocheted Rivera Dress $6,590; Vogue Runway's Laird Borrelli-Persson, reviewing Resort 2027, singled out a red column with "a goddessy air".

One caution at this level: Markarian offers no in-house tailoring and states that made-to-order pieces "often require on body tailoring for desired fit", so budget an outside tailor — and none of the fifteen brands in our files publishes what an alteration costs.

The arithmetic

Twenty wears is the honest occasion number, and at twenty wears everything above is a Skip: $16.75, $29.75, $32.25, $42.50, $84.75, $89.50. Tripling the count to twelve outings a year does not rescue the top: the $1,695 Marla is still $28.25 and the $645 Chantal still $10.75, a Skip by seventy-five cents.

The one thing that does work is leaving the category. Finley's $335 linen shirtdress worn weekly for five years is $1.29 a wear — Buy at full price. Nothing about the dress changed; it stopped being occasionwear.

THE PENNYWEIGHT VERDICT

Buy on sale — and buy the dress that is not only a wedding dress.

The number is the pair: $16.75 a wear as occasionwear against $1.29 a wear as a shirtdress, on the same $335 Finley Jasmine. Every purely-occasion pick here is a Skip on our bands, so if the piece cannot leave the wedding, it needs a markdown or a much longer horizon to be defensible.

If it has to be an occasion dress, buy it where the terms are longest. Finley's thirty days is the widest window on this board by a factor of two; Gwynn's gives fifteen, and Markarian, Anna October and Heirlome all give fourteen. At Gwynn's there is a further catch: once the tailor touches it, it is yours.
