Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant: 400+ labels, 15 days, and the tailor voids the return

A 22,000 sq ft independent luxury department store carrying 400+ labels, with on-site bespoke tailoring and a return policy that will not take back altered apparel. Prices $12–$9,900, and three press quotes that do not resolve at the outlets named.

Alteration tools, tailor's chalk, pins, cloth tape and a basted muslin toile, on paper.

Fifteen days, and the tailor is in the same building. Gwynn's of Mount Pleasant runs on-site bespoke tailoring, and its return policy will not take back altered apparel. Between them, they decide how to shop here.

What they actually sell

Not a label — an independent multi-brand luxury department store outside Charleston, South Carolina. The 22,000 sq ft flagship carries roughly 5,000–7,000 SKUs across 400+ labels.

The floor runs women's designer ready-to-wear, occasion gowns, denim, knitwear and swim; men's tailoring, suits, shirts, shoes and accessories; handbags; fine jewelry — Kwiat, Marco Bicego, Pomellato, Spinelli Kilcollin — and fashion jewelry; prestige beauty and fragrance; home, tabletop and gifts; children's; and a small pre-loved line. Services run to bespoke tailoring, personal styling, bridal and gift registry, same-day local delivery and Affirm financing.

Who makes it, and where

Country of origin follows each designer; the roster is Italy-heavy: Marco Bicego, Pomellato, Canali, Kiton, Isaia, Brunello Cucinelli, Zegna, Santoni, Fratelli Rossetti, Marco Pescarolo, Premiata, Etro and Loro Piana. Two own labels appear on the designer list — "Gwynn's" and "Gwynn's Italian Label" — with no manufacturing disclosure anywhere on the site.

Specification is good at SKU level on the jewelry, then stops one step short. Kwiat listings publish karat, carat weight, colour and clarity: the 18K Gold Riviera Diamond Necklace is 18K yellow gold with graduating Kwiat Tiara cut stones, 1.01 CTS total, GH colour, VS2-SI1 clarity, at $4,990; the Sirena Huggie Hoops are 0.58 CTS, GH, VS2-SI1, at $5,500; the Diamond Cross Pendant is 1.30 CTS, FG colour, VS2-SI1, at $5,800. No listing names the laboratory that issued those grades, and none — Kwiat or Marco Bicego — states whether its diamonds or gemstones are natural or lab-grown. Kwiat SKUs give no country of origin either.

On the founding date. The store dates itself to 1967, founded by Gwendolyn and Norris Ward, and that is the better-sourced figure: Charleston Style & Design, whose 2025 article we have read at the outlet's own site, confirms the 1967 founding and the store's 58 years. The conflict is worth naming: the Better Business Bureau's profile for the corporate entity lists a 2010 business start date, and the two records have not been reconciled. We use 1967, the figure with independent editorial confirmation behind it.

The terms

Every term below is the store's own published statement, recorded 5 September 2026.

Fifteen days from receipt. Short for luxury e-commerce, though not the shortest: on the fifteen-brand board in our return-window reference, thirteen of fifteen give you fifteen days or fewer. Merchandise must be unworn, undamaged, unaltered and saleable, with tags and original packaging. Return shipping is free if the return arrives within the fifteen days, and in-store returns are accepted at any location on the same clock. Refunds take 10–14 days. Price adjustments are honoured within 10 days; holiday purchases are returnable until 15 January.

Alterations void returnability. Buying a suit from the shop that has the tailor is a real convenience; the moment the tailor touches it, it is yours. Decide inside fifteen days, then book the fitting.

Also not returnable: special orders, personalised or monogrammed items, perishables, Final Sale items, and anything discounted 50% or more. Sale items under 50% off may be returned inside the window. Large or heavy items may incur pickup or restock fees.

Shipping. Complimentary US shipping over $100, excluding sale items. Overnight and next-day orders ship the next business day, and same-day local delivery runs Monday to Saturday on orders placed by 1pm. No international shipping terms are published anywhere on the site.

No sizing help. No size range, size chart or fit guidance appears on the site; ring sizes are given per SKU.

The press record

Two of the five press citations in our file are coverage read at the outlet's own site, both from Charleston Style & Design: Ellen Uribe's 2025 profile, which documents the 22,000 sq ft floor, the 5,000–7,000 SKU count and the planned King Street store; and Carolina Ramirez Herrera's 2019 piece on a $1 million renovation with a 2,000 sq ft addition, private shopping suites and expanded tailoring.

The other three are the store's own claims, reproduced on its About page; none could be located at the outlet named. Gwynn's attributes to WWD in 2017 the line "This landmark boutique has risen to the pinnacle of its class above others in the industry"; the source article could not be found at WWD. It attributes a "Best Cocktail/Formal Attire" award to Mount Pleasant Magazine — and a search of that outlet's own site returned no matching article — not merely unverified but unsupported at the publisher. And it attributes to Southern Living a framing about "designer clothing and old-school service"; no article was located. None of the three should be read as coverage those outlets published.

The independent customer record is close to empty: no Trustpilot profile, zero Sitejabber reviews, a BBB profile with no rating, no reviews and no complaints. It also carries pre-loved designer goods, a category where authentication disputes are common, and publishes no authentication process.

Comparable brands

Marissa Collections, Stanley Korshak, Hirshleifers, Mitchells Stores, Tootsies and Elyse Walker. What to compare is not the label list, which overlaps heavily, but the return window and whether alterations sit inside or outside it.

THE PENNYWEIGHT VERDICT

Buy at full price — and settle the decision before the tailor does.

The number is 15. Fifteen days to return anything, with the alteration that makes a $5,990 caftan or a Canali suit fit sitting on the far side of that line. The store pays return shipping inside the window, takes returns in person, and honours a price adjustment for ten days. Good terms — they simply expire fast, and one in-store service cancels them outright.

On the jewelry, hold the money until two questions are answered on paper: which laboratory issued the colour and clarity grade, and whether the stone is natural or lab-grown. Neither appears on a $4,990 Kwiat listing or a $9,900 Marco Bicego pair, and at those prices both change what you own.

Prices, specifications, policy terms and press citations are drawn from Gwynn's own pages and product data and from the named outlets, as recorded in our brand files on 4–5 September 2026; the business start date comes from the Better Business Bureau's own profile for the corporate entity. Terms change without notice. The Pennyweight buys nothing, accepts no gifted product, and is not affiliated with any brand or retailer named here.
