Markarian: $825 to $8,895, made to order in the Garment District

Ready-to-wear $825–$4,495, bridal $3,350–$8,895, and the occasion midi clustered at $1,595–$1,995. What Markarian makes in New York, what it costs, and the 14-day return ladder that ends at 21 days.

Manila paper pattern pieces and a tracing wheel on a cutting table with a hooped panel of hand-set sequins.

Markarian's ready-to-wear runs $825 to $4,495. Its bridal gowns run $3,350 to $8,895. Between those two figures sits the number that actually describes the label: the occasion midi dresses cluster at $1,595–$1,995, tightly enough that the catalogue reads less like a range than one decision taken in different fabrics.

Alexandra O'Neill founded the brand in New York in 2017, and it has stayed a New York label in a literal sense that is unusual at this price. The terms attached to it are where a buyer's attention should go.

What they actually sell

Occasionwear and eveningwear, plus a full bridal line. Ready-to-wear covers day, mini and midi dresses, gowns, tops, knitwear, skirts, trousers, jackets and coats. Bridal covers gowns, separates, veils and accessories, with semi-bespoke custom orders alongside. The brand states that each piece is made to order in an effort to reduce waste.

Vogue Runway's review of the Fall 2026 collection, written by Irene Kim, located the centre of gravity plainly: "What Markarian does best is formalwear." The catalogue agrees. The volume is in dresses bought for one specific evening.

Who makes it, and where

The about page states: "Designed and produced in New York City, Markarian has a strong belief in supporting the fine craftsmanship that the New York Garment Center offers." The brand describes the ocean-blue coat-and-dress ensemble Dr Jill Biden wore on 20 January 2021 as designed, produced and hand-finished in the New York Garment Center.

Two precisions. No offshore manufacturing is disclosed anywhere on the site — but no country-of-origin breakdown by category is published either, so the domestic-production claim is made at brand level rather than per SKU. And there is no fibre-content or supply-chain disclosure page at all: fabric information reaches the buyer through product naming rather than a materials statement. What recurs across the current range is sequin embroidery, sequined cotton, lace, metallic brocade, ikat prints, tapestry, chiffon, floral denim and pleating, and Vogue's Fall 2026 review notes beaded floral embroidery. The craft claims the brand does make are hand-finishing in the Garment Center and made-to-order construction, and it says most existing silhouettes can be produced in alternative fabrics, colours and prints.

There is no direct-versus-wholesale premium here to arbitrage. What differs between channels is not the price — it is the return policy.

Fabric swatches are $35 for up to five samples.

Signature pieces

The sequin-embroidered occasion midi is the volume core: Nara at $1,595, Gazania at $1,595, Coquette at $1,695. Above it sit the floral ikat corset and strapless dresses — Cypress Dusk Marigold Ikat Midi $1,695, Numa Blue Floral Ikat Corset Midi $1,895, Aria Blue Floral Ikat Strapless Midi $2,895 — and the metallic brocades, Numa Ivory Metallic Brocade Corset Dress at $1,950 and Yvette Ivory Metallic Brocade Puff Sleeve Dress at $2,195. Zebra stripes arrived for Fall 2026: Pearsei mini $1,750, Amina midi $1,695.

Bridal is a separate business with separate arithmetic — numbered collections now up to Collection 10, with Violetta at $8,575, Marguerite at $8,750 and Angelonia at $8,895.

The terms

Read this before the photographs.

Returns are graduated, and short. Fourteen days from receipt for a full refund. Fifteen to twenty-one days gets store credit or an exchange only. After twenty-one days, nothing. Items must be new, unused, undamaged and in the original packaging. Fourteen days is the modal window across the fifteen luxury brands in our return-window reference — nine of the fifteen sit there — but the cliff at twenty-one is Markarian's own.

The two policy pages disagree about a fee. The shipping-and-returns page applies a $25 restocking fee to all returns. The refund-policy page describes the fourteen-day full-refund window and does not mention a fee at all. Both are the brand's published statements, and we have no way to know which one is enforced. On the $1,695 Marla, $25 is about 1.5% — small, but it is a charge you would not learn about from the refund policy alone.

Final sale is broad. Bridal, customised items, special orders and special production archive items are all non-returnable.

Lead times are long. Bridal is an 18–20 week make and the brand recommends ordering at least six months ahead. Custom pieces run 4–20 weeks and are final sale. Veils are 6–8 weeks.

Budget for a tailor. Sizes 0–16 are carried in the showroom, though not every style is available in every size, and the published size chart is described as a general guide. The brand does not offer in-house tailoring, recommends outside tailors, and says made-to-order pieces "often require on body tailoring for desired fit". That is an honest disclosure and a real cost — and it has to happen inside a fourteen-day window.

Shipping. In-stock pieces ship in one to two business days, with orders placed by 12pm EST leaving the studio the same day, and every order requires a signature. International goes via DHL with charges and duties calculated at checkout by Global-e. International returns run fourteen days with return shipping deducted from the refund.

The press record

Markarian holds the cleanest press file of the fifteen brands we cover: all twelve citations resolve to the outlet that published them.

Vogue Runway maintains a designer hub with reviewed collections through Resort 2027, and reviewed Fall 2026 Ready-to-Wear. WWD has covered the label repeatedly and keeps a running tag archive — the Malbon golf collaboration in 2026, Alexandra O'Neill's Woodford Reserve holiday bottle design in 2025, the Mayflower Inn & Spa holiday decoration commission in 2024, Christina Hendricks in Markarian at the "Skincare" premiere in 2024, Jill Biden in a Markarian floral dress at a UNESCO reception in Paris in 2023, the Summersalt swim collaboration in 2022, and a 2025 feature on designers and political dressing. Elle covered the brand's part in Naomi Biden's wedding in 2022.

Wholesale distribution is correspondingly broad: Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, Mytheresa and Moda Operandi, plus independents from Elizabeth Anthony in Houston to Gazebo in Winston-Salem, and bridal specialists including LOHO Bride and The Treat Dressing.

Comparable brands

For occasion and eveningwear at adjacent prices: Sachin & Babi, Lela Rose, Ulla Johnson, Zimmermann and Cult Gaia. For bridal specifically, Monique Lhuillier.

THE PENNYWEIGHT VERDICT

Buy at full price — the ready-to-wear.

The number that drove it is $1,695: the price of the Marla Lace Wrap Skirt Midi Dress on markarian-nyc.com, and the same price for the same dress at Moda Operandi. There is no channel arbitrage to wait for on a made-to-order piece, so the only thing a different shop buys you is a different return policy. At $1,695 the fourteen-day full-refund window, the unresolved $25 question and the outside-tailoring budget are the whole risk. The price is not the risk.

Bridal is not this decision. An 18–20 week make, six months of notice recommended and final sale across the entire collection is a commitment made once, in person, with the fit conversation settled first.

Every figure above is drawn from Markarian's own published pages and from the named outlets, as recorded in our brand files on 4–5 September 2026. Prices and terms change without notice. The Pennyweight buys nothing and accepts no gifted product.
